European Lottery
The Euro Millions lotto was in the beginning set
up by the national lotteries of France, Spain and the United
Kingdom and was launched on Saturday The 7th of February
2004. The first
Euro Millions lottery draw occurred on Friday the
13th of February 2004 in Paris. The United Kingdom, France
and Spain were the only European states participating at
first but lotteries from Austria, Belgium, the Republic of
Ireland, Luxembourg, Portugal and Switzerland also became
involved in October 2004.
The EuroMillions or the European lotto, as it is often
branded, pools the stakes of all 9 participating European
nations presenting a mammoth Euro lotto jackpot. With the
number of nations joining the EU on the increase, this will
undoubtedly lead to new states participating in the Euro
Millions lotto. An increase in the quantity of people
playing the EuroMillions will lead to a continuing increase
of the already considerable EuroMillions jackpots.
How To Play The Euro Millions Lotto
Each participant chooses 5 main numbers from 1 to 50 and 2
“Lucky Star” numbers from 1 to 9. During the draw, 5 main
and 2 lucky star numbers are then selected at random from
two draw machines containing numbered balls.
How The Prizes Are Allocated
The odds of winning the Euro Millions lotto jackpot
is a distant 1 in 76 million but the odds of winning any
prize is a generous 1 in 24. If nobody wins the jackpot in a
certain week, it is carried forward to the following week
which results in an ever growing jackpot prize. New rules
introduced on the 4th of January 2007 and became law on the
9th of February 2007 limit the quantity of consecutive
“rollovers” to eleven, with the jackpot rolling down to
lower prize levels in the eleventh draw if the prize is not
won.
The new rules also established
Euro lottery "Super Draws" which take place twice
yearly and present jackpots in the region of £100 million.
The difference with “Super Draws” is that the jackpot must
be won in the week of that draw; consequently, if there is
no ticket matching all the drawn numbers then the jackpot
will be rolled down to the next winning prize tier.
Some Memorable EuroMillions Payouts
• On 8 February 2008, the “Super Draw” jackpot of €130
million was collected by 16 individuals who matched the 5
main numbers and 1 “Lucky Star” number.
• In August 2007, a 40 year old former Royal Mail postal
officer from Scotland collected a EuroMillions jackpot of
€52.6 million. Up to now, this is the biggest lottery win
yet in the United Kingdom.
• On 17 November 2006, after rolling over 11 times, the Euro
lottery jackpot reached €183 million and was divided between
twenty blessed ticket purchasers.
